CUMBERLAND — Girl Scouts will staff a Good Shepherd food truck during Memorial Day activities on Monday, May 26.

The four Troop No. 106 scouts – Kallee Gallant, Molly Horton, Grace Mongeau and Allison Richards – have been working with the town’s community food pantry on Surplus 2 Supper, their Silver Project, according to an event press release.

The project is geared toward identifying surplus items at the pantry and using those items in recipes to be shared with pantry customers. Nearly 100 “recipe rings,” containing those recipes, have been given to pantry families.

As a means of raising awareness of the pantry, the Surplus 2 Supper team will staff the food truck in front of Greely High School from about 8-11 a.m. Monday. Breakfast sandwiches, muffins, fruit and yogurt parfaits, coffee, bottled water and smoothies will be among items sold.

Proceeds go toward the purchase of food from Good Shepherd to stock the pantry. The scouts will also sell copies of the recipe rings for $5, which will help raise funds for Silver Project expenses.

The Surplus 2 Supper team is also holding a food drive for the pantry. Items needed include peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, jelly or fruit spreads, canned fruits or vegetables, and flour and spices.
