CUMBERLAND — Incumbent Mike Edes and Bob Vail secured the most votes Tuesday in a four-candidate election for two seats on the Town Council.

Edes, a councilor for six years, earned 991 votes; Vail had 827. Candidates Geoffrey Michalak and Brian Cashin received 722 and 674 votes, respectively.

Voter turnout was 28.3%, according to the town clerk’s office.

“I’m very, very proud of our town,” Edes said Tuesday night, noting that in this year’s council and School Board elections, and a special election in state House District 45, “nothing ever got dirty … we just had good candidates for everything. We all get along.”

“I am extremely honored that the citizens of Cumberland have placed their trust in me for another three years,” Edes added.

Edes, a lifelong Cumberland resident, is retired from the Maine State Police and now a labor representative with the National Fraternal Order of Police. He has also been president of the Maine State Troopers Association, chairman of the National Troopers Coalition and a member of Jobs for Maine’s Graduates and the Falmouth-Cumberland Chamber of Commerce.

Vail could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. A general contractor who served with the U.S. Navy and was an officer with the Merchant Marines, he spent 15 years on both the Planning Board and School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors.

He has served with Cool Cities; Cumberland’s Comprehensive Plan, Ocean Access, and Assessment Review committees; and the Cumberland/North Yarmouth Lions Club.

Michalak is a product support consultant with Milton CAT (Caterpillar heavy equipment and power systems), and a former Cumberland firefighter.

Cashin, a principal at Goldiva Goldens, was formerly an organizer, founder and board member at First Commons Bank; chief information officer at Fidelity Investments; and chief technology officer at Chase Manhattan Bank.

He has chaired the Cumberland Aging in Place Committee, and has been a Cumberland firefighter/emergency medical technician, vice chairman of the Central Fire Station Building Committee, and president of the Bulfinch Condominium Association.

Uncontested elections in North Yarmouth

NORTH YARMOUTH — All elections in North Yarmouth were uncontested this spring.

Anne Graham and Jim Moulton were re-elected to their seats on the Select Board, receiving 202 and 175 votes, respectively. Kevin Desmond received 238 votes to continue representing North Yarmouth on the School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors, and Joy Malloy received 233 votes for her Cemetery Commission post.

Four Budget Committee posts were up for grabs. Incumbents James Knight and Andy Walsh received 201 and 206 votes. With two vacant one-year positions available, only Carol Lecours submitted nomination papers; she received 223 votes.

Voter turnout was 8 percent, according to the town clerk’s office.
