CUMBERLAND — Town Councilor Michael Edes and resident Michael Timmons have announced their candidacies for Cumberland County sheriff and state representative in House District 45, respectively.

Edes, who was elected to the Town Council last year, is a former Maine State Police sargeant who retired in January after 28 years. He was a past president of the Maine State Troopers Association and a past chairman of the National Troopers Coalition.

If elected sheriff, Edes said, he will stay on the council and plans to serve the rest of his three-year term. He said he considered running for sheriff four years ago, but was required by law to first leave the state police.

“It’s time for some new blood, and time to make some good, positive changes,” said Edes, who is running against incumbent Sheriff Kevin Joyce of Standish in the Democratic primary.

Edes has also been a police officer in Cumberland and Scarborough.

Timmons, formerly of Windham, lives at the Cumberland Fairgrounds, where he has been president for six years. He spent 44 years as a school administrator and teacher, and retired two years ago.

He also served six years on the Windham Town Council, and was its chairman for one year.

“I always wanted to serve in the House,” Timmons, a Republican, said.

He is running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Steve Moriarty, D-Cumberland. Moriarty represents District 108, which also includes a portion of North Yarmouth, as well as Chebeague Island and Long Island.

Because of redistricting that takes effect this year, voters in Cumberland and a southern part of Gray will elect Moriarty’s successor in what will be House District 45.
