PORTLAND — James Craig will be sworn in as the city’s 18th police chief Friday, during a ceremony at City Hall.

Craig was selected to become police chief in February by City Manager Joe Gray, and the City Council approved Gray’s pick unanimously March 2.

Craig is a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, most recently serving as a captain in charge of 390 sworn and civilian personnel. Craig, 52, is originally from Detroit, Mich.

Upon being sworn in May 1, he will become Portland’s first black police chief and take command of 160 officers and more than 50 civilian police department employees.

The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. in that State of Maine Room at City Hall.
