PORTLAND — The school district on Thursday announced the appointment of Beverly Coursey as the new principal of Nathan Clifford Elementary School.

Coursey, who holds a doctorate in educational leadership, management and policy from Seton Hall University, previously served as principal of two schools in School Union 44, which includes Sabattus and Litchfield. She is replacing Marysue Morrison, who retired after 37 years with the Portland School District.

Coursey has experience at all education levels. She serves as adjunct professor at Central Maine Community College, where she was selected in 2008 to participate in the Brazilian Fulbright Principal Exchange.

Previously, Coursey coordinated the first kindergarten through 12th grade standards-based curriculum in Ellsworth. She also has experience teaching migrant students and was lead instructor of a Head Start program. In Massachusetts, she was the educational manager and reading teacher for Job Corps, which helps students work while earning their GED.

Ten people applied for the position and five were called in for an interview.

Clifford Elementary School, on Falmouth Street, is scheduled to be closed at the start of the 2011 school year, when a new elementary school opens on Ocean Avenue.
