FREEPORT — Bob and Carol Leone of Edgecomb were named recipients of the L.L. Bean Outdoor Heroes Award and will receive $5,000 for their nonprofit organization Teens to Trails.
After the Leones’ 15-year-old daughter Sara died in a car accident in 2005, the couple searched for a way to help other teens enjoy the outdoors as much as they did as a family. They created Teens to Trails, which helps kids spend more time outside through high school outing clubs. The Leones also offer two full scholarships to attend a three-week summer wilderness experience with the Chewonki Foundation.
