PORTLAND — Cumberland County and a local substance abuse awareness organization have received a $625,000 grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to combat youth substance abuse in Falmouth, Cumberland, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Freeport and Pownal.

Casco Bay CAN, which stands for Create Awareness Now to Reduce Youth Substance Abuse, will receive $125,000 per year for five years to provide information and resources for parents and community members on the dangers of youth alcohol and drug abuse.

The grant is part of the Drug Free Communities program, which began in 1997 and supports more than 700 drug-free community coalitions across the country.
