SOUTH PORTLAND — Beer will not be a part of the Aug. 17 Buy Local festival coming to Bug Light Park.

Councilors on Monday decided against advancing revisions to Chapters 14 and 18 of the City Code that would have allowed temporary permits for beer and wine sales at city parks and beaches.

The ordinance would have required five councilors to approve a temporary permit for any events and for applicants to provide police protection in a cordoned-off area accessed only by people 21 or older.

The South Portland Buy Local Association hoped to include a beer tent staffed by SeaDog Brewing at the festival. City Manager Gailey said staff took no position on amending the ordinances.

Councilors Al Livingston, Jerry Jalbert and Melissa Linscott said beer and wine sales should not be used to lure visitors to city parks and beaches.

“I just don’t personally feel it is the right way to go,” Linscott said.
