S.P. gets grant to boost OUI enforcement

SOUTH PORTLAND — Motorists can expect to see extra patrols and checkpoints on the roads from now through Labor Day as police ramp up enforcement of drunken driving laws.

The Police Department received a $5,000 grant from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety to increase patrols through Sept. 6.

Lt. Frank Clark said South Portland has charged 87 people with operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs this year.

"We are very concerned about these offenses and other dangerous drivers on our roads here in South Portland. We want voluntary compliance, but can’t take that for granted," Clark said.

He said the annual grants from the Bureaur of Highway Safety allow the city to better focus its resources on traffic enforcement during the busiest times of the year.
