Locals take part at New England cross country meet

The Class B state champion Cape Elizabeth girls' team and others competed Saturday at the New England cross country championship in Manchester, Conn. The Capers were 12th as a team. Emily Attwood led the way with a 23rd-place finish (19:46). Rachel Nichols (79th, 20:47), Kelsey Barton (101st, 20:58), Hannah Doss (137th, 21:28) and Catherine Tierney (185th, 22:09) also scored. Scarborough senior Melissa DellaTorre (144th, 21:32) and South Portland freshman Nyajuok Pan (193rd, 22:13) competed as well. In the boys' race, Scarborough came in 12th as a team. Nate Hathaway had the fifth-best time (16:19). Nick Morris (56th, 17:29), Zach Brown (153rd, 18:25), Robby Hall (160th, 18:29) and Sean Griffin (197th, 18:51) were the scorers.

SMCC names Athletes of the Month

Southern Maine Community College's Liberty Mutual Athletes of the Month for October are Morgan Crespo and Alex Jenkins. Crespo, a women's soccer player, was named the Yankee Small College Conference Player of the Year, scoring 11 goals. Jenkins, a men's soccer player, was an All-Conference selection, scoring six goals and adding three assists.

Maine Baseball Hall of Fame taking nominations

The Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, founded in 1969, is seeking nominations for its 2010 induction class. Players, coaches, umpires, organizers and benefactors from all corners of the state who have achieved prominence in, or made valuable contributions to, baseball in Maine, will be considered.

MPS to join Premier Developmental League

Maine Premier Soccer will join the United Soccer Leagues Premier Developmental League, the top U-23 men's pro-amateur league in North America, for the 2010 season. As part of Maine Premier Soccer, the PDL franchise will take the field under the MPS Portland Phoenix moniker and will be coached by general manager and former Cape Cod Crusaders PDL head coach, Paul Baber.
