Bernard wins Gatorade award

Scarborough senior baseball standout Chris Bernard was named Maine's Gatorade Player of the Year last week. The University of Maine-bound Bernard has led the Red Storm to an 11-4 record (and the No. 3 spot in the latest Western Class A Heal Points standings) with a 6-1 record on the mound and a .564 average at the plate. Bernard has allowed just two earned runs in 41 innings pitched (for an 0.34 ERA) and has struck out 57 hitters while walking only six. Offensively, he has nine doubles, five home runs and 23 RBI.

SMCC golf fundraiser
Southern Maine Community College is hosting its fifth annual athletic department and foundation fundraising golf tournament June 16 at Prouts Neck Country Club in Scarborough. Proceeds help the college's continued effort to offer one of the best small college athletic programs in New England.

South Portland coaching vacancies
South Portland's athletic department is seeking to fill several coaching positions. At the high school, a freshman football and first team boys' soccer coach are needed. A boys' cross country, 7th grade boys' soccer and 8th grade boys' basketball coach are sought at Memorial Middle School. Mahoney Middle School has openings for a head and an assistant football coach, 7th grade girls' basketball and soccer coaches and an 8th grade boys' basketball coach.

Scarborough softball camp upcoming
The Big Hits Summer Softball Camp, sponsored by Scarborough Community Services, will be held in June and July at the Scarborough High School fields. Scarborough varsity coach Tom Griffin leads the lineup of coaches involved. Ages 6 through 8 go from June 29 to July 3 from 9 a.m., to 12 p.m. The cost is $100. Ages 8 through 12 attend the same dates from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m. The cost is $185. Ages 12 through 17 go from July 13 through 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $185. Scarborough residents will receive a $10 to $15 discount.

Cape Elizabeth golfer shoots his age
Cape Elizabeth's Alan Leathers enjoyed a rare feat last month when he shot a 66 to match his age at the Apple Mountain par-72 course in Clarksville, Ga. Leathers is a graduate of the University of Maine and runs the Beach to Beacon every year. He drained a birdie on the 18th hole to clinch his 66.
