Fabulous fall for Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland
The fall of 2009, perhaps more than ever before, was sensational and triumphant for Forecaster Country sports teams.
Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough and South Portland factored into the championship hunt in football, soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf and volleyball.
On the gridiron, Cape Elizabeth isn't done yet, as it's coming off its first-ever regional title and prepares to face Leavitt in the Class B state game Saturday night.
The Scarborough boys' soccer team did it again, going undefeated for a second straight year and repeating as Class B state champions. Cape Elizabeth and South Portland also made the playoffs, as did the Scarborough girls.
Scarborough's field hockey team went undefeated and won its first Class A title with a stirring overtime win over perennial champion Skowhegan.
The Cape Elizabeth girls' cross country team repeated as Class B champions. The Capers boys, along with Scarborough and South Portland also enjoyed a strong season.
South Portland's golf team produced its finest season in years, while Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough were competitive.
Last, but certainly not least, Scarborough's volleyball program continued to grow, winning a playoff match for the first time.
It's time to turn our attention to winter, but let's give the fall a fond farewell on the way out.
