Area students recognized
by National Merit
EVANSTON, Ill. — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named two students from Cape Elizabeth High School as semifinalists in its 55th annual National Merit Scholarship program.
Laura F. Catsos and Carolyn A. Holland of Cape Elizabeth have qualified to continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, to be announced in April 2010.
Nine students from Cape Elizabeth High School and three students from South Portland High School were named Commended Students by National Merit. Commended students are recognized for placing in the top five percent of approximately 1.5 million students nationwide who entered the scholarship competition, but will not advance further in the competition.
Commended Students from Cape Elizabeth are Devon H. Bottomley, Elizabeth Briggs, Peter Brigham, Jay B. Cushing, Samuel C. Eisenberg, Graham B. Findlay, Spencer M. Garland, James C. Haller, Katherine D. Lavallee. Chelsea Bartlett, Kaiya Hanson, and Gregory Reinhold from South Portland High School were named Commended Students by National Merit.
CEHS hosts Middle
Eastern women's panel
CAPE ELIZABETH — The World Affairs Council of Cape Elizabeth High School recently hosted a community panel discussion with six women from Bahrain, an island off the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia.
The panel discussion focused on their experience as women in politics in a Middle Eastern country. The women were in the United States as participants in the State Department International Visitors Program, which brings political figures from around the world to the United States to talk to community groups about their home countries.
Taber earns student
SCARBOROUGH — Katelyn Taber of Scarborough was awarded the 2009 Wright-Pierce Student Scholarship.
Wright-Pierce, an engineering firm with offices throughout New England, annually awards 13 students of staff members with a student scholarship. Taber's father, Pete Atherton, is a senior vice president and wastewater practice group leader at the Wright-Pierce Portland office.
