Helen C. Skelton, 82: Nurse, committed to volunteerism
SOUTH PORTLAND — Helen C. Skelton, 82, died in Topsham on March 24.
She was born in Damariscotta on May 28, 1926, one of eight children born to Wallace Wilton Chadwick and Martha F. Gardner.
On New Year's Eve in 1947, she met her husband Ken on a blind date. They married in 1949 and raised five children. In 1999, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
She was a devoted full-time mom and was involved in many community organizations, such as the Brownies, Cub Scouts and volunteering with the American Heart Association, Dyer Elementary School library and local soup kitchens. Her volunteer work after retirement earned her an award presented to her at the State House.
In 1975, at age 49, she completed her nursing degree at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and worked at Mercy Hospital for the next 20 years.
She was known for making her favorite family snack mix, "Skel-yums," which was sold at local stores for some time. In her later years, she traveled extensively with her husband Ken, son Ken Jr., and his wife Martha.
She is survived by her siblings, Priscilla Jones of Newcastle, Jason Chadwick and wife Patricia of Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; daughter, Barbara Bard and her husband Roderick of Hooksett, N.H. and their children, Kelly and Karen of Brunswick; daughter, Jean Libby and her husband Raymond of Brunswick and their children, Evelyn of Brunswick and Jeremy Skelton and his wife Abby of Lewiston; son, Ken Skelton Jr., and his wife Martha of Florence, Ky.; son, David Skelton and his wife Lia and their children, Andrew, Lincoln, Kendra, and Mariyah of Brunswick; son, Craig Skelton and his wife Marcy and their children Brandon and Neeka of South Portland; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be from 3-5 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 28 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
