Alfred M. Palmer, 86
HERNANDO, Fla. — Alfred M. Palmer, 86, died Aug. 30 at home with his children, Ronald Palmer and Pamela Spear, by his side.
He was born in South Portland, a son of Walter Palmer and Kathleen Brewer Palmer and attended local schools.
He married Marguerite Bachelder at his parents South Portland home, where he lived and raised his own family.
Over the years, he worked for the U.S. Navy, the City of South Portland, Portland Pipe Line Corp., and in television repair.
With his father, Walter, and son, Ronald, he was a volunteer firefighter and a lifetime member of the Pleasantdale Hose Co. Number 3.
After his wife Marguerite's death, he retired to Hernando, Fla., where he has lived for the past 20 years.
He enjoyed living in Florida, spending time grooming his property, riding his motorcycles and building model boats. In Florida, he had many friends he enjoyed spending time with. During the summer months, he would return to Maine to spend time with family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite Bachelder Palmer, a brother, Lester E. Palmer, a sister, Arlene E. Palmer Emery and a foster brother, George Hines.
He is survived by his four children, Ronald R. Palmer and his wife Joan of Portland, Carolyn A. MacLean and her husband Ralph of South Portland, Patricia A. Fairbanks and her husband Patrick of Yarmouth, and Pamela A. Spear and her husband, Geoffrey of Oxford; six grandchildren, Cynthia Palmer, Michael Palmer, Jason MacLean, Stacey Medina, Chris Fairbanks, and Avery Spear; 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
