Richard M. "Mike" Libby, 83

SCARBOROUGH — Richard M. "Mike" Libby, 83, died Oct. 6 in Portland after a long illness.

On Dec. 16, 1925, he was born in Scarborough, a son of Richard M. and Maude Plowman Libby.

After graduating from Scarborough High School in 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served with the Marines from May 1944 until he was discharged in 1945.

On Feb. 21, 1948, he married Ruth Baizley.

He worked a variety of jobs before graduating from Gorham State Teachers College in 1969. In 1975 he received his master's degree.

He taught in Portland for several years and later taught science at the Arundel Mildred L. Day School until he retired in 1985.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling extensively, taking trips from the South Pacific to Europe, and yearly trips to Florida to visit his brother-in law.

In retirement he enjoyed refinishing furniture and working in his garden.

He belonged to the Cumberland County Retired Educators, the Scarborough Student Scholarship Program and was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church in Scarborough.

He was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2006.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Mathew Libby and his wife Christine Teravainen Libby and Robert Leon Libby and his wife Beth Bowser Libby, all of Scarborough, and a daughter, Ruth Libby Matheson and her husband Douglas, of Allen, Texas; four grandchildren, Matthew Malcolm Libby of Scarborough, Andrew Roderick Matheson of Texas, Stefanie Alyssa Libby and her husband, Douglas Berrill, of Windham, and Hannah Dorothy Libby of Scarborough.

At his request, there will be no visiting hours.

A celebration of his life will be held from 3:30-6 p.m., Nov. 28, at the Maine Veterans Home, 290 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough.
