Letter: Support Cape's Shore Road Path

I urge residents of Cape Elizabeth to support the Shore Road Path. There are compelling reasons to do so from the standpoints of how it will improve pedestrian safety, restore some country-road walkability to Shore Road, and connect some of Cape's community assets and parks. The project is also an excellent candidate for funding through the DOT's Quality Community Program, which means it could be built for 20 cents on the dollar.

But I think that the real reason to build it boils down to simply a consideration of the kind of community we wish to live within. A path along Shore Road would be a beautiful resource that would provide transportation, recreational, economic and aesthetic benefits for years and years to come. The Shore Road Path would demonstrate that Cape recognizes the beauty it is blessed with, and acts to preserve safe public access to public roadways.

Even if my taxes had to go up to pay for this project, I would support it. I believe that providing access and safety to pedestrians along a busy and attractive stretch of road is more important than saving a few bucks on my property tax bill. I would hope that the wealthiest town in Maine could follow the example of towns with fewer resources, and act to improve pedestrian safety and access to one of its most important roads.

I urge you to e-mail the Town Council and to attend the council meeting on Sept. 15 to tell them you support the path.
