Letter: Support Scarborough schools, teachers

I was stunned and extremely disheartened last spring to find out that our schools were facing some very deep cuts to their budget. Although I'm relieved that there was some reduction made to the initial proposed figure, it is a huge disservice to our community to not provide our schools with the essential tools they need to educate our children. It's shocking to me that Scarborough operates a budget which provides the least amount of money spent per student than any other school system in Cumberland County. If we're really that efficient with the money we had to spend on our schools last term, why continue to make cuts to programs that are critical to our children receiving a quality education?

I purchased my home in Scarborough almost 10 years ago primarily due to the outstanding reputation of its school system. It's troubling to see such little regard paid to the teachers and schools in our town. They are currently working without a contract and facing a year ahead with fewer resources. Not only will our children suffer if this doesn't turn around, but, our community as a whole will suffer. These decisions directly impact our long-term property values and seriously tarnish the reputation of Scarborough being one of the most desirable communities to live in Maine.
