Historical Society leads July 4 celebrations

SOUTH PORTLAND — Benjamin Franklin will make an appearance at Bug Light Park to begin the Fourth of July celebration put on by the South Portland Historical Society.

The society also hopes to open its new museum, recently relocated to near the entrance of Bug Light Park. A shipyard exhibit is being set up in preparation for the event, and the gift shop will be ready for the public.

John Kierstead, playing Franklin, will read the Declaration of Independence at noon at the Cushings Point House at the park, which will be followed by concessions sold to raise funds for the historical society, craft tables for kids and old-fashioned games such as the three-legged race. Texas Roadhouse restaurant will give out coins good for free kids meals.

No July Fourth events are planned in Cape Elizabeth or Scarborough. Scarborough will host fireworks in August as part of its Summerfest celebration.
