Water main break restricts traffic on Ocean Street in South Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND — Police are asking motorists to avoid Ocean Street between Broadway and Highland Avenue while Portland Water District crews repair a broken water main.

The main at the Broadway-Highland Avenue intersection broke at about 1 a.m., police said in a press release Wednesday morning. It is expected to take several hours for workers to repair the break.

Several roads have either been closed or restricted.

While the northbound Ocean Street remains open, the stretch from Highland Avenue to Mayberry Street is closed to southbound traffic heading toward Cape Elizabeth. Ocean Street from Broadway to Highland Avenue has been restricted to local traffic.

Highland Avenue from Ocean Street to Plymouth Road is closed to all traffic.

Lt. Todd Bernard said crews expect normal traffic patters to resume by around 3 p.m.
