Access restored to I-295 in South Portland via Veterans Memorial Bridge

SOUTH PORTLAND — After being closed for two weeks, Exit 4 on Interstate 295 reopened Monday morning to southbound traffic.

The southbound lane on the Veterans Memorial Bridge that leads to the interstate on-ramp from Portland has also reopened.

Both lanes were closed to allow workers to build a southbound auxiliary lane between Exits 3 and 4, most of which is complete. Maine Department of Transportation project manager Ernie Martin said only shoulder closures should be needed to execute the finishing touches, like lighting.

Road crews will now begin work on a northbound auxiliary lane between the exits and a sound barrier along the roadway.

Martin said he expects the $5.3 million project to be finished in early December.
