Ecomaine communities break recycling record
PORTLAND — Member communities of ecomaine continue to recycle at a record-breaking rate, the group said in a press release.
Last fiscal year, ecomaine communities recycled 66.8 million pounds, beating the previous record of 61.4 million pounds in fiscal 2009.
North Yarmouth's 48.02 percent recycling rate was the highest of ecomaine's 39 participating communities.
Officials credit a single-stream recycling program, which does not require residents to sort recyclables, for boosting the rate. Municipalities are also increasingly promoting recycling as a way to trim budget costs, since towns and cities are charged for dumping trash, but not for recycling.
