IRS offers Saturday help for some taxpayers

SOUTH PORTLAND — The Internal Revenue Service will open offices in South Portland and Augusta on Saturday, Jan. 30, to provide assistance to taxpayers eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The additional office hours are for those taxpayers who cannot make regular business hours.

The tax credit is offered to people who work and generally made less than $48,000 in 2009. Qualified taxpayers could earn a tax credit of  more than $5,600, depending on filing status and family size.

Taxpayers should bring the following materials for anyone listed on the tax return: a valid driver's license or photo identification, Social Security card, dates of birth, all income statements, dependent child care information (payee's name, address and Social Security Number), bank account numbers, prior year's tax return and other pertinent papers.

Offices at 220 Maine Mall Road in South Portland and 68 Sewall St. in August will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, log onto IRS.gov
