Holiday tournament upcoming New look at Expo


PORTLAND-It's hard to believe, but we're just a little more than a week away from yet another holiday boys' basketball tournament at the Portland Expo.

This year's tournament, the 23rd annual, runs Dec. 26 through 30 with several local teams, as well a few from out of state, participating.

This year's holiday classic, hosted by the Portland High School Basketball Boosters, is co-sponsored by Yankee Ford and, which will also provide audio and video content from the games.

Action begins the day after Christmas when Deering faces Marshwood at 11:30 a.m. South Portland meets Mt. Ararat at 1 p.m. Greely and Mountain Valley do battle at 2:30 p.m. Defending Class A state champion Cheverus faces a team from Massachusetts in an exhibition at 4 p.m. Windham and Falmouth square off at 5:30 p.m. Portland faces a Massachusetts squad in an exhibition at 7 p.m. Gorham and Cape Elizabeth bring the curtain down on the first day of action when they meet at 8:30 p.m.

Play continues Saturday, Dec. 27. In the first game, at 11:30 a.m., Yarmouth plays the loser of the Gorham-Cape Elizabeth contest. The South Portland-Mt. Ararat and Windham-Falmouth losers play at 1 p.m. The Deering-Marshwood and Greely-Mountain Valley losers meet at 2:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., the South Portland-Mt. Ararat and Windham-Falmouth winners square off. Cheverus meets the Greely-Mountain Valley winner at 5:30 p.m. The Deering-Marshwood winner plays the Gorham-Cape Elizabeth winner at 7 p.m. Portland closes the night by meeting Susan Wagner of New York, a tournament regular in recent years, at 8:30 p.m.

Play continues Monday, beginning at 12 p.m. Sanford and Westbrook join the fun. The semifinal games will be at 6:30 and 8 p.m., respectively, with the winners advancing the final.

The tournament ends Tuesday, Dec. 30. Sanford and Susan Wagner play at 3:30 p.m. Dirigo, featuring Notre Dame-bound standout Thomas Knight, meets Westbrook at 6:30 p.m. The championship game will be contested at 8 p.m.
