Locals compete in New England swim championships
Swimmers and divers from the city of Portland took part in the New England championships Saturday at Bates College in Lewiston. The top male individuals were Deering senior E.J. Googins, who was runner-up in the 50 freestyle (22.67 seconds), and Rams junior Brian McRae, who came in second in diving (330.10 points). Googins was also sixth in the 100 free (51.25). Cheverus junior Mark Dumond placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke (1 minute, 7.69 seconds). Deering junior Jacob Powers finished 14th in the 500 free (5:36.35). The Rams 200 free relay squad (Zach Sawyer, Dominic Montello, Max Hudson and Googins) was ninth (1:36.64). Deering was also ninth in the 400 free relay (Powers, Montello, Hudson and Googins, 3:39.90). The Rams 200 medley relay team (Sawyer, Corey Delmonte, Hudson and Montello) came in 16th (1:55.21).
On the girls' side, Deering junior Kristen Grandonico came in 11th in the 50 freestyle (26.61 seconds). Rams junior Jami LeRoy finished 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:10.87). Deering's 200 free relay squad (LeRoy, Dayna Kazilonis, Meghan Hutcherson and Grandonico) was 10th (1:52.21). The Rams 400 free relay team (Grandonico, Kazilonis, Hutcherson and LeRoy) placed 10th as well (4:07.37).
McMullin named softball coach at Cheverus
With the 2009 spring season right around the corner, Cheverus High School recently announced that Amy McMullin has replaced Rick Supinski as head coach of the varsity softball program. McMullin served as an assistant the past two seasons and was the varsity field hockey coach last fall, leading the Stags to the regional semifinals, earning SMAA Coach of the Year honors. McMullin played softball, field hockey and basketball at Messalonskee High School and field hockey and basketball at Franklin Pierce College, where she studied sports management. McMullin was twice on regional softball champions in high school. Cheverus is coming off a 9-9 season, which included a loss to Scarborough in the quarterfinals. Supinski went 24-42 in his four seasons, which included two trips to the playoffs.
SMAA basketball Senior All-Star games Wednesday
The Southern Maine Activities Association will hold its boys' and girls' basketball Senior All-Star games Wednesday at Deering High School. The girls' game tips off at 6 p.m. The boys' contest starts at 7:30 p.m. There will also be boys' 3-point and dunk contests. The cost is $3 for adults and $2 for students.
Portland Babe Ruth registration ongoing
Portland Babe Ruth is holding registration for boys ages 13 through 15 Tuesday between 6 and 8 p.m., at the St. Pius Church Hall on Ocean Ave. Any boy residing in the city of Portland, born between May 1, 1993 and April 30, 1996, is eligible to register for a tryout. The registration fee is $150.
MCU Comedy night fundraiser upcoming
Maine Coast United and TOPSpurs TOPSoccer Programs, a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, are hosting a Comedy Night fundraiser Friday at The Gold Room (next to Portland Sports Complex). Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and the show begins 8:30 p.m. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Deering student-faculty game upcoming
Deering High School's annual student versus faculty basketball game will be held Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m., at the DHS gym. There will be nominal fee.
Beach to Beacon on-line registration opens March 15
On-line registration for the 12th annual TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K race will open at noon on March 15. Race organizers have expanded the field size to 6,000 participants this year- in increase of 500 runners - but expect spots to fill up even faster than last year's record of 26 hours. On-line registration is the only way to sign up for the race, which is scheduled for Aug. 1. The 2009 entry fee is $35. Registration for the Kids Fun Run will also open March 15, though this year it will be run the day before the 10K, on July 31.
Back Bay Lacrosse registration underway
Registration for Back Bay Lacrosse for Portland-area youth grades 3 and 4, 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 is accepting registrations now through March 27 at www.backbaylacrosse.com. Parent night is March 18 at Presumpscot School. Girls at 6 p.m. Boys at 7 p.m.
Bruins alumni to face local hockey players
Former Boston Bruins will face local high school players Friday, April 3 at 7 p.m., at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Portland Firefighters Union is encouraging local residents to show support by making a contribution.
Greater Portland men's Over-50 softball league open for registrations
The Greater Portland Men's Over-50 softball league located in Portland and South Portland and now in its 11th season, is seeking players for the 2009 season. Players who turn 50 prior to Dec. 31 are eligible.
