Waynflete seeking varsity crew assistant
Waynflete School needs a varsity crew assistant coach for the upcoming spring season. Practices begin in mid-March and the season concludes at the end of May. Experience rowing and/or coaching is required. Boat maintenance and trailering experience is a plus. Portland girls runner-up at district shoot-off
Portland's Isabel Dawson (8-9 age group) and Katasia Titherington (10-11) both finished second at Sunday's Elks Coastal District Shoot-Off in Bath.
Local girls shine in Hot Shots competition
The Portland Parks and Recreation department hosted the MRPA/Maine Red Claws Hot Shots competition last weekend in the girls' division. In the 9-10 age group, Riverton's Allie Green was first with Lyseth's Arianna Fagone runner-up. In the 11-12 division, St. Brigid's Brooke Dawson came in first with Lincoln's Cassidy Coyne placing second. In the 13-14 age group, Lincoln's Delaney Coyne was first. The winners advanced to the southwestern regionals, which will be held Feb. 20 in South Portland.
Two Portland gymnasts finish in top 10
Portland's Ava Gaudet and Sophia Ham finished in the top 10 at the recent Brestyan's 2010 Invitational in Medford, Mass, which featured almost 700 gymnasts from throughout New England. Gaudet was second in the uneven bars and balance beam, 10th in the vault, tied for third in floor exercise and was third all-around in the Level 4 child division. Ham was eighth in floor, 10th in vault, beam and all-around. Both girls are members of the American Flyers Gymnastics team.
South Portland coaching openings
South Portland High School is seeking a junior varsity girls' lacrosse coach, Mahoney and Memorial Middle Schools need a girls' lacrosse and a boys' lacrosse coach and Memorial is seeking a softball coach for the 2010 season. FMI, 767-7705.
SMCC men roll to two wins
The Southern Maine Community College men's basketball team enjoyed a 116-63 home romp over Eastern Maine CC and a 108-77 home win over Holyoke CC this weekend to improve to 10-9. In the first game, Paul Holland had 19 points, Coleman Findlay added 17 and Mike Burchill and Mike Von Rotz both finished with 16. Against Holyoke, Holland had 20, Mackie 17, Findlay 16 and Kory Martin 13.
USM hosting 3-on-3 benefit tournament
The 16th annual Dr. Noel Paradise Memorial Swish-Out Childhood Cancer 3-on-3 Challenge will take place Sunday, Jan. 31 at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. Registration is encouraged with the field limited to 36 teams. FMI, 773-5671, ext. 273 or email@example.com.
