Waynflete senior Morgan Woodhouse (left, with coach Brandon Salway) entered Tuesday afternoon's home game against Wells 20 points shy of becoming the second Flyer in three seasons to reach the 1,000 career point mark. She ended the drama early when she hit a leaner with 1:11 remaining in the first half. She didn't rest on her laurels, scoring 18 more in the second half to wind up with 38 (one shy of her career high) in a 62-55 victory.
"I've seen that banner every day at practice and I wanted to get my name up there," said Woodhouse, who as a sophomore watched teammate Margaret Veroneau reach 1,000. "I treated it as a regular game, but I knew it was close. It's exciting."
"It was great for her today to not only reach the milestone, but to do it in dominating fashion," added Waynflete coach Brandon Salway. "She's been so good this year at buying into the young group. Her leadership's been great. The younger kids look up to her. I wasn't sure she'd get it today, but to get it by halftime is an impressive performance. When we have a player like that you have to get her the ball as much as you can."
The Flyers (12-3 and fourth in the latest Western Class C Heal Points standings) close the regular season Friday at home versus Greater Portland Christian School.
