Kindergarten registration
begins Feb. 22 in Portland

PORTLAND — The Portland Public Schools will begin enrollment for kindergartners for the 2010-2011 school year beginning Feb. 22. 

Children must be at least five years old by Oct. 15, 2010, to register.

Registration takes place at the child’s local school.  Parents should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization record and proof of residency in the city of Portland. 

Portland's elementary schools are the East End Community School, Clifford School, Hall School,  Longfellow School, Lyseth School, Peaks Island School, Presumpscot School, Reiche Community School and Riverton School.

Students whose families speak a language other than English should contact the Multilingual Intake Center at 874-8135 to make an appointment for registration.

The Portland Public Schools uses a lottery system to select out-of-district kindergarten students for East End Community School and first grade students for the Many Rivers Program at Hall Elementary School.

Applications for East End Community School are available at the school's Web site at portlandschools.org or by calling 874-8228.  Completed applications must be received by March 12.

The Many Rivers Program gives tours and applications by appointment for interested families.  The application deadline for the program is March 26.

Cheverus qualifies 12
for honors jazz festival

PORTLAND — The Maine Music Educators Association selected 12 Cheverus High School musicians as District 2 honors All State Jazz Festival musicians.

The All State Jazz Festival will take place March 1 and March 2 at Fryeburg Academy.

Gabe Terracciano of Portland qualified for upright bass and bass voice and will play in the jazz band.

Mark Dumond of Bowdoinham qualified for drums and will play with the jazz choir.

The following students qualified for the jazz choir: Emily Bauer of Kennebunk, Samathan Pion of Standish, Rae Hawkinson of Cumberland, Paige Lucas of Cumberland Foreside, Jacob Boyce of Portland, Jin-Hwan Jang of Buxton, Will Maxwell of Kennebunk, Tom Yates of West Baldwin, Eric Martin of Lyman and Tim Woods of Portland.

USM business school
earns reaccreditation

PORTLAND — The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business has granted re-accreditation to the University of Southern Maine School of Business.

AACSB International accredits only 5 percent of schools of business, or 579 institutions across 35 countries. The accreditation is based on 21 standards related to teaching, research  continuous improvement and curriculum.

The USM School of Business originally earned AACSB accreditation in 1999.
