Edward "Ted" F. LaVangie, 77: Life centered around family

PORTLAND — Edward F. "Ted" LaVangie, 77, died June 12 with loving family by his side at Maine Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Portland on July 17, 1932, a son of George M. and Alice G. (Mazzeral) LaVangie.

After graduating in 1950 from Albany High School in Albany, N.Y., he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Worchester.

On Feb. 9, 1957, he married Rita A. Molloy at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

He was a long-time sales representative for Del Monte until he retired in 1992.  

For many years he was active in the East Deering Little League Program. A highlight was when he coached his 1969 All-Star team to a state championship.

An avid supporter of the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots, he enjoyed talking team stats and trivia with anyone.

He was predeceased by a son, Paul E. LaVangie on May 10, 2007, two sisters, and a brother.

Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Rita; a son, James F. LaVangie and his wife Janice of South Windsor, Conn., and a daughter, Ann M. Lackey and her husband Bill of Kerrville, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Diane LaVangie of South Portland; four grandchildren Meaghan, Peter, Michael, and Jack LaVangie; and a brother, Richard and his wife Marie.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the capable and compassionate Intensive Care Unit staff at the Maine Medical Center. Their help and support will not be forgotten.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday, June 14 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15  at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 492 Ocean Ave., Portland.
