Portland hires sustainability coordinator

PORTLAND — The city's new sustainability coordinator, charged with creating policies and projects to advance energy conservation and efficiency, climate change initiatives and environmental sustainability, will begin his job May 10.

The city received nearly $685,000 in federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funding to work on sustainability initiatives. Part of that funding was used to create a 3-year sustainability coordinator position.

The city announced April 22 it had hired Portland resident Ian Houseal for the job. Houseal is currently a special assistant the the city administrator in Lewiston, working on sustainability projects for that city. He has also worked as a sustainability consultant in Nova Scotia.
