Janet R. Newlin, 52

SOUTH FREEPORT — Janet R. Newlin, 52, died Feb. 27 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born Oct. 3, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, daughter of Owen and Doris Jean (Coxon) Newlin. 
After high school, she moved to California, graduating with a bachelor's degree from Antioch West in Monterey.
She relocated to the east coast to attend Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, N.H., where she received a master's degree in education.
She was previously married to Steven Oransky and had three children together.
She was passionate about education and held numerous positions in the field of education, including, teacher, director, interpretive naturalist and environmental educator. She most recently served as the director for the Freeport Student Aspirations Partnership.
She was community minded, coordinating the Summer Festivals from
1995-1998 and was active in the Harraseeket Yacht Club and the South
Freeport Church. In 2007, she was honored with the Carol Kaplan Award for
outstanding community service by the town of Freeport .
With an eye for art and space, she enjoyed building and remodeling homes. Her most challenging task was remodeling her home, a former fish cannery from the 1800s.
Her hobbies included flying in acrobatic airplanes, traveling with family and friends and her vintage automobile.
She is survived by her children, Eric Oransky of Freeport, David Oransky, a senior at Santa Clara University, CA, and Kari Oransky of Freeport; her parents, Owen and D.J. Newlin of Des Moines, Iowa; her sister Tammie Gregori and husband Ed of Fort Collins, Colo., her brother John Newlin and wife Patty Carton of Brunswick,  and her sister Christine Kovach and husband Rick of Scottsdale, Ariz.; seven nieces and nephews; many cousins; aunts and uncles.
A visitation will be held at 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., March 5 at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m., March 6 at the Freeport High School gym, 30 Holbrook St., Freeport.  A reception will follow.
