Dorothy J. Emmertz, 79: Faithful church volunteer, loved gardening

FALMOUTH — Dorothy J. Emmertz, 79, died March 11 at a Portland hospital.
She was born in Andover, New Brunswick, Canada, on Feb. 22, 1930, a daughter of Claude and Alice (Lane) Knapp.
The family later moved to Maine and in 1948, she graduated from Gorham High School.
She attended business school in Portland and worked in banking, a candle shop and at the Westbrook Hospital.
She married James T. Emmertz in 1950 and they were married for 50 years.
She was a member of the Pownal School board, a member and past president of the Pride's Corner Garden Club and was very active in church activities at St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Windham, particularly the Christmas Fair.
Her hobbies included cooking, gardening and spending time at her camp in Island Falls.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, James, and sister-in-law, Jane R. Emmertz and brother-in-law, James T. McCormick.
Survivors include her children, Thomas James Emmertz and his wife, Cynthia of Gray, Andrew Scott Emmertz and his wife, Bonnie of Falmouth, Kathleen M. Sweet and her husband, Russell of Naples, Elizabeth A. Uminski and her husband, John of Falmouth, Barbara L. Hunt and her husband, Bruce of Naples; a sister, Edith M. McCormick of Portland; nine grandchildren, Aaron Rose of Portland, Jeremy Levitan of Massachusetts, Brett and Colby Emmertz of Falmouth, Erika Levitan of North Carolina, Amanda and Mallory Emmertz of Raymond, Chelsea Hunt of Naples, and Sarah Uminski of Falmouth; many nieces and nephews; step-grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., March 20, at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, 40 Windham Center Road, Windham.
