Raised in St. Louis by Robert and Julia Holland, she attended the Mary Institute, Bennington College and studied art at Washington University in St. Louis.

During World War II she was an ambulance driver for the Red Cross while living in St. Louis.

She met her future husband, David Clarke, on a blind date, greeting him with a flower between her teeth. They were married for 64 years and had an exceptional bond.

Her life revolved around her community and family. She shared her creative talents by designing wonderful costumes for local theaters and incredible Halloween costumes for her children.

She loved watching her children and grandchildren having fun, from watching them ski at Sunday River, or watching her family swim, kayak, bike and play tennis during summer trips to Squam Lake, N.H.

Her son, Robert Clarke, and her sister Virginia, predeceased her, as well as her beloved husband of 64 years, David Clarke, who died six weeks prior to her on Nov. 6, 2010.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally Clarke Hassey and her husband Michael of North Yarmouth, and Nancy Clarke Brewer and her husband Russ of Darien, Conn., and their children, Chandler, Charlie and Chelsea; two sons, David Clarke and his wife Vickie of Windham, and their two daughters, Crystal Clarke Kyles, her husband Damon and their son, Benjamin, and Heather Clarke Novakouski, her husband Jeffery and their children, Jeremy and Alexis; and son, Peter Clarke, his wife Mary of Garden City, N.Y., and their children Peter and Eliza; daughter-in-law Jane Clark of Fort Myers, Fla., and her son, Christopher.

A memorial service will be held at The First Congregational Church in Yarmouth on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2 pm.

Memorial donations may be made to The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 U.S. Route 1, Suite 1, Scarborough, ME 04074.
