H. Donald "Don" Cheney, 85

FREEPORT — H. Donald "Don" Cheney, 85, died peacefully Oct. 29 surrounded by family.

Born on May 26, 1924, in Auburn, N.Y., he was a son of William Warren Cheney and Ella Clark Cheney.

In October 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Force and served in the 446th Bomb Group of the Second Air Division during World War II. As a gunner, he successfully flew 30 missions with the 707th Squadron and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal.

He was employed as a retail executive.

Always active, he was a speed skating barrel jumper, fearless skier, avid golfer and swimmer.

He was predeceased by his grandson, Andrew Donald Cheney.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Hilary Glenn Cheney; his children, H. Donald, Jr. and his wife Ingrid Cheney of Fairhope, Ala., and Cynthia Glenn Cheney Christie of Newburyport, Mass.; his grandchildren, Alexandra Velena Christie of New York City, Sarah Cheney and her husband Craig Makens of Houghton, Mich., Emily Cheney Wellerritter and her husband Timothy Wellerritter of Cumberland; his great-grandchildren, Elise Cheney Makens and Sigrid and Monty Wellerritter; and his sister, Marian Cheney Gaul of Florida.

A memorial service was held in Portland.

Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
