Frederick W. 'Ted' Canfield, 81: Taught business in Russia with Peace Corps

YARMOUTH — Frederick W. “Ted” Canfield, 81, died peacefully May 22 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.  

A Navy veteran and successful businessman, he was devoted to, and loved by, his family.

Born in Boston on Feb. 1, 1930, the eldest son of Haskins Bishop Canfield and Anne Waterman Canfield of Belmont, Mass., he graduated from Belmont Hill School in 1948.

In 1952 he graduated from Williams College and married Janet Littlefield. They had four children together and were married for 40 years.
 
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1953 and after graduating from the Officers Candidate School, he served 40 months as a lieutenant combat information officer in Korea aboard the USS Hazelwood.

After the service, he was accepted into Harvard Business School, where he earned his MBA.
 
He worked in financial management for various companies throughout the country, including Boston, St. Louis, Mo., and Memphis, Tenn.

An entrepreneur and free spirit, he was selected for a Peace Corps mission to Russia in 1992 to help develop the Russian private business/free enterprise system. He was in Vladivostok, Russia, with the Peace Corps for seven years. While in Russia he met and married Zhanna in 1996 and settled in Yarmouth.
 
He enjoyed talking politics and was a staunch Republican. He loved the ocean and for many years enjoyed cruising East Penobscot Bay in his Boston Whaler.

Above all, the most important thing in his life was his family. He was a loving father whose children will never forget the sound advice he offered over the years.

Well-known for his integrity, manners, and intellect, he was well-respected by all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Zhanna Canfield of Yarmouth; four children, Scott Canfield and his wife Minh of Yarmouth, Leigh Canfield and his wife Leslie of Yarmouth, Amanda Richardson and her husband Scott of Yarmouth, and Clarke Canfield and his wife Amy of South Portland; his children's mother, Janet Canfield of Memphis, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, who called him "Gumpa," Brendan Canfield, Erik Canfield, Anushka Canfield, Eli Canfield, Sam Richardson, Julia Richardson, Ean Canfield, and Jesse Canfield; his brother David Canfield of Frederick, Md., and sister, Ann Smart of Springhill, Fla.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of his life at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4, at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
