Alice Kennedy (Nickerson) Burleigh, 97: Founding member of Falmouth church

YARMOUTH — Alice Kennedy (Nickerson) Burleigh, 97, died Aug. 4.

She was born in Falmouth on Sept. 21, 1912, the fifth of six daughters of Effie Jeanette (Moore) and Walter Francis Nickerson.

After she graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1931, she was hired as a governess and moved to Natick, Mass., where she met and married William “Bud” O. Burleigh.

They moved to Town Landing Road in Falmouth in 1952 and established Burleigh Electric in 1955, which is now owned by her granddaughter, Cheri Lozoraitis.

She was a founding member of the Foreside Methodist Church, now known as the Foreside Community Church.

Additionally, she was a member of the Foreside Fireman’s Auxiliary and a certificate holder of the U.S. Power Squadrons.

A woman of great spirit, openness to others and to life, she showed the depth of her character in the way she faced death.

Surviving are two children, a son, Roger Wendell Burleigh, and a daughter, Charlotte Ann (Burleigh) Mary; three grandchildren, Robert William Burleigh, David Arthur Mary and Cheri Lynn (Burleigh) Lozoraitis; two great-granddaughters, Emily Grace and Katerina Faith Lozoraitis; several nieces and nephews, and their children.

A memorial service will be held in September at the Foreside Community Church, 340 Foreside Road, Falmouth, at a date to be determined.
