Letter: Falmouth should support new town center

I’m writing to support a plan creating a town center in the soon-to-be-vacated Lunt and Plummer-Motz schools in Falmouth.

Often taxpayers can be scared away from town improvements because of potentially bigger tax bills, but residents need more time to know all of the funding options available for this project. Frugal use of town resources could make this a very affordable project that could come at little or no cost to taxpayers, while saving pieces of our town’s history. A longer-range look at this project could explore the center as a revenue-generator. If more people knew the potential of using this public space, more people could become involved in planning its use for both civic purposes and for commerce.

People don’t move to a town or open a business in a town because it has big national chain stores or fast food restaurants, which are available everywhere. What attracts and keeps people is a vibrant community with great schools and great services. We have these things in Falmouth, and we have a unique opportunity to make our community even better.

Falmouth residents need more time to know all the facts about re-using the vacated schools, and we need to cast our votes on this issue. I hope we get to do so.
