Letter: Falmouth facilities panel provided cost, tax data
I was disappointed to read the significant error in last week’s article on the Falmouth Community Facilities Planning Committee’s recent recommendations. Over the past two years, directed by the Town Council, the committee gathered public input in various ways, including keypad polling at two public forums and on-line surveys after the forum presentations were posted to the town’s website. The second forum took place this past April and included complete cost and tax implications of the proposed Town Center. Perhaps if council Chairman Tony Payne had attended the forum, he would know that the positive feedback the public expressed was based on a full presentation of the entire project. In contrast, Payne’s recent personal poll of his personal e-mail list lacked any background information about the project.
While keypad polling, online surveys and personal polls offer us multiple views of local opinion, the best poll is, of course, the ballot box. The Facilities Committee has offered a unanimous vision of a Town Center based on the sale of numerous town properties and consolidation of several municipal functions on the Lunt and Plummer-Motz site after it is vacated and renovated. Whatever your perspective, this is an enormous decision for Falmouth, one with great implications for our future; let each voter weigh in at a November referendum.
