Letter: Sad season for SAD 51 parent

My family is steeped in the Greely tradition; my children are the third generation to attend Greely High School. I was very disappointed to discover that one entire week in late October was devoted to the celebration of gay, lesbian and trans-sexual lifestyles at the high school. A movie was shown in advisory class and each day had its own special theme. I was appalled that no letter came home to warn parents of this controversial subject. I am a practicing Christian and I’m concerned this type of celebration could confuse young minds searching for their own sexual identity.

My own curiosity led me to ask the School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors if several taxpayers including myself could donate a Christmas tree for the high school lobby. I was told no, (because) it may violate the First Amendment for a public school to display a Christmas tree.

I feel like Rip Van Winkle; have I awoken in a place where the Christmas tree is now an offensive symbol, while questionable lifestyles are celebrated in our school? Is this still America? Are we still "one nation under God"? Does our currency still read “In God We Trust”?

If you are as outraged as I, I suggest you voice your concerns to SAD 51.

In the season of giving I leave you with one final thought, I raise my glass and say, “Here’s to yesterday.” Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah! I’ll see you in church.
