Letter: Corruption, arrogance in Freeport

Seacoast United soccer in Freeport? That’s not the issue. Expanded commercial zoning in residential neighborhoods is the issue.

Here in Freeport, we have the chairman of the Town Council, the chairwoman of the Planning Board, and the previous Freeport Economic Development Corp. president, now a councilor, all guiding and participating in deliberations and decisions in their alternate roles as private sector Freeport Economic Development Council board members, devising alternative strategies to produce a desired “yes” vote on an issue scheduled to come before them as Town Council/Planning Board members. This is a clear conflict of interest and an inside job.

Furthermore, the Planning Board chairwoman clearly, as recorded in corporation minutes in her role as vice president of FEDC, engaged in prohibited ex parte communications with the FEDC board regarding agenda items coming before her on the Planning Board.

If all of this is not a conflict of interest, it certainly gives the appearance of impropriety. Bottom line: there’s a total absence of proper ethical conduct. Are these folks’ behaviors corrupt and arrogant? Yes they are, in every sense of both words.

Wendyll Caisse says:

I’ve thought a lot about the best way to respond to this fabricated, and factually flawed letter, and have been thinking heavily on the two words you chose – ‘arrogant and corrupt’ to personally attack both me and members of the Town Council. I thought it would be best to just put it out there, in a public forum because I have nothing to hide.

Factually I can say that no conflict of interest occurred, as it is completely within the realm of normal board discourse to share with FEDC what is coming up on the Planning Board agenda (this is public information) and I have no vested interest in Seacoast United. I might also add that the planning board unanimously decided NOT to even CONSIDER changing the allowed uses in RR1 and the only agenda option we did discuss was Eric Pandora’s interesting suggestion to consider an overlay district. This was discussed and voted on and was not submitted to the Town Council as a recommendation.

As far as your word choice concerning my character flaws, I want to divulge that I do have flaws; impatience and no verbal filter bubbled up to the top today in my informal straw poll with friends and business associates, but arrogance and corruption did not, so you missed that too.
I am left with a question…if your accusations are baseless and your personal assessments are off base, what is it that you are trying to do with a letter such as this, not knowing me and skewing all the facts?

It seems like you want to participate. Seacoast United is not the issue, expanded commercial zoning in residential zones is not the issue – because no one wants this - the issue is, you have something to say and you don’t have a convenient way to say it anymore.

Guy, if you want to affect good, positive change I would urge you to volunteer and get involved in the myriad of municipal and civic opportunities that are available to all of us; communicate in a civil manner, understand that everyone that commits and volunteers their time on local boards are doing so because they have a desire to serve and serve Freeport well, to the best of all of their abilities, and sometimes – weird – opinions differ. Let’s just let the elected Council do what they should be doing: lead with balanced and intellectual discourse, stop wasting their time with baseless accusations and let them get to work.
