Bean adds Freeport winter outdoor camp for children
FREEPORT — To promote outdoor education, healthy activities and fun, L.L. Bean will host a program to encourage children to play outdoors this winter.
The Winter Adventures Day Camp is designed for children ages 8 through 12 and is a three-day, four-hour program.
L.L. Bean spokeswoman Carolyn Beem said the camp is new for the company.
"The staff wanted to expand the Outdoor Discovery School, customers have suggested the idea, and we want to promote healthy activities in the winter," she said. "This is an opportunity for children to experience a range of outdoor activities."
The program runs Monday, Dec. 28, through Wednesday Dec. 30, from noon to 4 p.m. The classes will include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, GPS treasure hunts and snow fort building. All equipment will be provided, Beem said.
The program is in line with the philosophy of the No Child Left Inside Act, she said, which encourages children to spend more time outdoors, to learn more about their local environment and to learn more about nature by engaging in outdoor activities.
"We want to help combat childhood obesity, and encourage children to be healthy and active," Beem said.
The counselors are Bean employees who have taught adults and children in outdoor Discovery Schools.
Registration is $95 a child for the three-day program. Beem said there will be another Winter Adventures day camp during February vacation.
