Freeport council names finance director
FREEPORT — The Town Council Tuesday night unanimously voted to accept Abigail Yacoben as the new financial director to replace departing director Gregory L'Heureux.
Yacoben, 32, will begin March 16, but will split her time between the city of Bath until April 13.
"I am very excited to be here," she said. "It will be a new challenge and I think the work will be equal, if not more difficult."
Yacoben spent the last two years as the financial director of Bath, where she won the Government Finance Officers Association's Distinguished Budget Award. She said Bath is only the second town in the state to receive the honor, and that she would like to bring the award for Freeport.
Before moving to Bath, Yacoben was the financial director in the village of Richton Park, Ill. She is a graduate of Wayneflete High School in Portland and the University of Chicago.
Yacoben said she agreed to help the city of Bath finish their budget before diving into Freeport's finances.
"Working with budgets is something I really like," she said. "I enjoy
this season, and enjoy the puzzle of working with numbers."
Town Manager Dale Olmstead said out of 32 applicants, Yacoben's experience matched Freeport's needs. He said the two interview groups strongly recommended Yacoben.
"I am delighted," he said.
Former financial director L'Heureux also came from Bath six years ago. L'Heureux in February accepted a job in South Portland. He has agreed to help transition Yacoben to her new position.
In other business, the council voted to set a public hearing on March 17 to discuss the Five Year Capitol Plan. Councilors will hold a workshop session on March 24, and by April 7, the Capitol Plan will be approved.
Copies of the plan are available to view at Town Hall and on the town Web site.
Councilors also renewed and extended a three-year lease for waterfront parking at the Brewer South Freeport Marine for $9,500. They also accepted a bid from H.C. Crooker and Sons Inc., for town paving to begin in the spring.
The next council workshop will be Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.
