While Bowdoin's basketball and hockey teams had mixed results in recent action, the women's indoor track team stole the headlines.
Bowdoin's women's indoor track team finished first out of nine teams at the Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis University Saturday. Laura Peterson (long jump) and Elsa Millet (200) had first-place finishes. The Polar Bears' men's team placed second. Kyle Hebert won the 200 and anchored a first-place 4x400 relay team. Bowdoin's distance relay team was also first, as was Luke Fairbanks in the shot put.
Bowdoin's women's basketball team beat visiting Bates College 84-53 Friday, but lost 67-56 to visiting Tufts University Saturday. Against the Bobcats, the Polar Bears got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Leah Rubega. Bowdoin had an overwhelming 51-25 edge in rebounds. Katie Bergeron added 16 points. In the loss, the Polar Bears' first at home to the Jumbos since 1991, Colleen Hart was the high scorer with 12. Bowdoin is now 14-4 on the season (2-1 in NESCAC action). The Polar Bears are at Amherst College Friday and visit Trinity College Saturday.
The Bowdoin men's basketball team dropped a 57-54 decision at Bates Friday, then bounced back with an 89-81 victory at Tufts Saturday and is now 11-5 overall (1-2 in NESCAC play). Against the Bobcats, Mark Phillips had 12 points. In the win, Kyle Jackson scored 17. Bowdoin hosts Amherst Friday and welcomes Trinity Saturday.
The Bowdoin men's hockey team lost twice away from home last weekend, 3-1 at Connecticut College and 5-3 at Tufts. Leland Fidler had the Polar Bears' lone goal against the Camels. The Polar Bears (7-7-1, 4-6-1 in NESCAC play) host Salem State Friday at 7 p.m., and the University of Southern Maine Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Bowdoin women's hockey team also lost twice last weekend, 4-3 at home to Amherst and 4-2 to visiting Connecticut College. Against Amherst, Sage Santangelo stopped 30 shots. She made 22 saves against the Camels. Dominique Lozzi and Jill Campbell had goals for the Polar Bears, who fell to 3-9-1 (1-7-1 in league play). Bowdoin goes to Middlebury College Saturday and visits Williams College Sunday.
Bowdoin's Nordic ski team opened the 2009 Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association schedule Saturday with a ninth-place finish at the Bates Carnival. The Polar Bears are back in action this weekend at the New Hampshire Carnival.
