Elizabeth V. Wells, 93: Artist, writer, church deacon

BRUNSWICK — Elizabeth V. Wells, 93, formerly of Harpswell, died Aug. 22 at her residence.

On Jan. 11, 1916, she was born in New Haven, Conn., the daughter of Ernest G. and Mae E. (Henze) Voos and attended local schools.

She also attended Boston University.

For more than 60 years, she spent summers in Harpswell, before moving to Maine in the early 1980s.

She was an artist who loved painting, interior design, floral arranging, and designing ceramics and textiles. As a published writer, she wrote articles in Today's Woman Magazine.

A devoted member of the Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell, she served in various capacities, including deacon, member of the flower committee, and along with her husband, organized the church's first auction.

She was an excellent cook, and frequently provided meals to families in need.

She is predeceased by a granddaughter, Robin Hurst, who died in 1989.

Surviving are her loving husband of 57 years, William Wells of Brunswick; children, William E. Wells and his wife Mary of Northford, Conn., Nancy Hurst and her husband Wayne of Harpswell, and Linda Gillis and her husband Winthrop of Harpswell; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell.
