Charles E. Greif, Sr., 95

BRUNSWICK — Charles E. Greif, Sr., of Brunswick, died Feb. 19.  

Born in Englewood, N.J., on Nov. 2, 1915, he was the only son of Sylvia Sullinger and Charles Greif.

In 1933 he graduated from Morristown High School in New Jersey and attended Cornell University, where he served in the ROTC program. 

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1937 and was the first in his family to earn a college degree.

He met the love of his life, Alice Peavey, on a blind date, and they were married in her hometown of Twin Falls, Idaho, on Dec. 25, 1939. They returned to New Jersey to begin a family that eventually grew to six children.  

In February 1941, while working for the Bakelite Corporation, he was ordered to active duty with the U.S. Army.

During World War II he served as commander of the 58th Ordnance Company in England, North Africa and later in Germany, where his company earned the Fifth Army Plaque and he earned a citation for his skill and bravery.

He returned to the United States in July 1945 and was preparing to leave for the Pacific when Japan surrendered.

After the war he and Alice settled on 4 acres in Boonton Township, N.J., while he worked at the New York City office of Union Carbide until he retired in 1974.

In the summer of 1961 he and his family visited Wayne, Maine, and later became summer residents of the lakeside town. He cherished his time with his family on Androscoggin Lake. In 1991 he and his wife became year-round residents of Maine when they moved to Brunswick.  

His wife Alice predeceased him on Dec. 7, 1993.  

He is survived by his six children, Peggy Arden and her husband Bruce of Ann Arbor, Mich., Mary Livingston and her husband Rudy of Chesapeake, Va., Jane Brothers and her husband Rick of Sedona, Ariz., Charles E. Greif, Jr., and his wife Betsey of Orlando, Fla., Lynn Roush and her husband Paul of Gillette, Wyo., and Arthur “A.J.” Greif and his wife Donna Karlson of Bar Harbor; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, and his special Scottish Terrier, Patti.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick.
