Charles "Russell" Goodwin, 85

BAILEY ISLAND — Charles "Russell" Goodwin, 85, died June 20 at the Freeport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

He was born in Lisbon Falls on Feb. 22, 1924, the son of Roy B. and Ethel Marr Goodwin.

He graduated from Becker College in Worcester, Mass., and also attended Middlebury College in California.

From 1942-1945, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a mechanical engineer. His awards and decorations include the famed Theater Ribbon, Air Offensive Europe – Normandy, Northern France, Rheinland, Ardennes, and the Good Conduct Medal.

After the war, he worked various jobs in the Lisbon area, and retired from M. Grumbacker Brush Company after 36 years as a finishing floor supervisor. After retiring, he continued to work 17 more years at Days News and at the Jenny Station.

He was an active member of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Portland for many years.

He loved people and life. As a Royal Historian, one of his most memorable times was when he met Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. He especially enjoyed riding in his luxury automobiles, and dining out in every restaurant from Maine to Florida. His favorite vacation spot for 27 years was on Monhegan Island, where he became an integral part of the artistic scene.

He was predeceased by his stepbrother, Clyde Coombs of Mechanic Falls.

Surviving are two nieces, Elaine Gartley of Lisbon and Gloria Gilmore of New Gloucester; numerous cousins; his "adopted" family, the Dudley's of Bailey Island, including his longtime friend and companion, Wayne B. Dudley of Bailey Island; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., June 27, at St. Paul's Anglican Church in America, 279 Congress St., Portland.
