Phillipe E. Bernier, 48: Operated Bowdoinham Boat Yard

BOWDOINHAM — Phillipe E. Bernier, 48, died at home Jan. 23 with his family by his side, after a long battle with cancer. 

On June 27, 1961, he was born in Brunswick, the son of Edward H. Jr. and Therese (Ouellette) Bernier and was educated in local schools.

For 10 years he worked as a painter before beginning his career in boat building and restoration.

He worked for Washburn & Doughty and Samples Boat Yards until he became a subcontractor in carpentry and boat restoration.

During this time he started his own boat restoration business, Bowdoinham Boat Yard, which he operated until he became ill.

His interests included hunting, fishing, gardening, motorcycles, cooking, and spending time with his dogs.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, going on trips to Thomas Point Beach, and driving “Gurp” the neighborhood car.

A proud member of the “corner gang,” he was involved in recovery programs in the Bath-Brunswick Area. 

He was predeceased by his father Edward H. Bernier, Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Mary Halsey of Bowdoinham; mother, Therese Bernier of  Brunswick; son Ian Halsey of Bowdoinham; two grandchildren, Mckayla Barrett of Farmingdale and Kaleb Halsey of Bowdoinham; four sisters, Vivian Labonte and her husband Peter of Bowdoinham, Rejeanne Menard and her husband Gregory of Latrobe, Penn., Michelle Bernier of Gulfport, Fla., and Monique Ward and her husband Horace of Gulfport, Fla., and a brother, Thomas Bernier of Brunswick; nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; cousins; and a great-nephew.

Memorial services were scheduled for Thursday. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help defray funeral expenses.
