Brunswick council weighs raising building fees, liquor license for Maine Street Station pub
BRUNSWICK — The Town Council will consider increasing building construction fees and a liquor license for a new pub at Maine Street Station when it meets Jan. 25.
The new fee structure was proposed in November and covers building, renovation and electrical permits.
A revised proposal includes increasing the minimum fee for building permits from $25 to $45, and raising construction rates from 20 cents to 35 cents per square foot.
The ordinance also calls for increasing the cost of electrical inspections by the codes enforcement office from $10 to $45.
The council is expected to review the proposal, although it may not take any action.
The council is also scheduled to review a liquor license application for a new tenant at the Maine Street Station project.
Byrnes Irish Pub, which already has a location on Center Street in Bath, has applied for the license. According to Town Clerk Fran Smith, the pub hopes to open sometime in February.
Patrick Byrnes, who is applying for the license, could not be reached for comment.
The Bath pub's owner, Joe Byrnes, announced he was expanding to Maine Street Station last summer. Byrnes also opened the Admiral Steakhouse last fall.
His restaurant will be the second to open at Maine Street Station, a multi-use development where the first phase of construction was completed last summer.
Other tenants are Scarlet Begonias, Bowdoin College and the town. The pub's opening will leave one vacant space at 16 Station Ave.
The second phase of the project is supposed to feature a New England-style inn at the corner of Maine and Noble streets. However, JHR Development, the developer, has yet to announce plans for the inn or if it has acquired an investment partner.
The council Monday will also consider a road ordinance that will establish a consistent policy for future road construction.
The meeting is at the municipal meeting facility at 16 Station Ave. at 7 p.m.
