Crossing flags available in downtown Brunswick

BRUNSWICK — Crossing Maine Street should now be a bit safer.

Bright, yellow flags are being placed at key intersections along the four-lane downtown street to boost safety by making pedestrians more conspicuous. The flags are available for people to carry from one side of the street to the other as they cross. They are the work of the Brunswick Downtown Association, the town and local businesses.

Greg Farr, executive director of the association, called the flags "a simple low-cost solution" in a difficult economic climate.

"The challenge is keeping the flags from being vandalized," he said. "I am confident that our community will want to protect the safety of (people) who have been afraid to cross this part of a busy, and dangerous downtown part of Maine Street. If it succeeds we will expand the effort."
