Downtown Bath hotel celebrates official opening

BATH — The city’s new downtown hotel celebrated its grand opening June 24.

More than 100 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Hampton Inn, which followed a month-long "quiet" opening.

Karen Whitman of Hilton Hotels said the 94-room hotel at 140 Commercial St. won the company's Outstanding Developer Award.

“This project took an area of town that had been dormant for years and revitalized the area,” Whitman said. “It took on characteristics of both historic downtown and the residential area.”

Developer Peter Anastos received city approval in November 2008 to build the 55,000-square-foot hotel on the Prawer block. Last June the City Council supported an amendment that expanded the city’s downtown tax increment financing district to include the hotel.

The amendment added 2.4 acres to the existing district and was meant to capture new private-sector investment from the hotel.

The hotel property is bounded by Front, Commercial and Summer streets.
